It’s hard to admit, but I have major trust issues.
When I was a little girl, I was too gullible. At home, my parents would warn me day after day not to trust people. They lie, cheat and steal, they would say. Even people in the Bible who were really good and chosen by God still did those things!
Fast forward about three grades and I was in middle school. I remember my Spanish class offering a trip to Spain to learn more about their culture and language, but my parents thought I was too young to travel so far; they promised I would be able to go on the Europe trip a few years later if I studied hard and were eligible to attend, so I set my heart on it and got to work.
I think you can guess what happened next… high school rolled around and letters were sent out to parents notifying them that their children were chosen to go on the Europe trip. I waited years for that opportunity and continually reminded my parents that I wanted to go, but for some odd reason my letter never came.
The following year I found out my parents did receive that letter, but they threw it in the garbage without telling me and forgot all about it.
Thus began a long trend of questioning the intentions of those around me.
College came around and things made a turn for the worst. I was kicked out of a dorm, almost expelled from school, and rumors spread around campus that took me five years to eradicate. Needless to say, I went from a naive girl who desperately wanted to entrust the benefit of the doubt to every human being I laid eyes on, to a paranoid young adult who destroyed friendship after relationship because of a broken heart.
About half-way through my college experience, I was exposed to a couple of verses about God’s faithfulness. Because of my past, it was really easy for me to doubt whether or not God would really do what He promised. Why would I believe that a God I’d never met, never heard from audibly, and had never shook hands with, would provide for me, love me unconditionally, and literally do everything humans in this world can’t do?
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 10:19-23 (NLT)
Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:7-9 (NLT)
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NLT)
God’s Word is so good in dissolving our greatest doubts! Every time I find something else to worry about, His Word has an answer. Sometimes I feel powerless while I wait for Christ to come back. But what does 1 Corinthians say? We don’t lack any spiritual gifts, therefore we can serve God in every capacity and bring even more glory to His name!
Friends, He who promised is faithful. No matter what circumstance you’re struggling with this week, know that we have a loving Father who not only wants to give us every good thing, He actually does. Stronger than the walls of a fortress, He never breaks His promises, and that’s something we can hold on to forever.
